If this is your first time purchasing “on the hoof” beef, you’ll need to start planning for your freezer space. The available freezer space inside the freezer is listed in cubic feet.

The rule of thumb for freezer space is 1 cubic foot of freezer space for every 35-40 pounds of packaged meat. A whole cow from our production will provide you approximately 275-300 pounds of packaged meat.

275 pounds / 35 cubic feet = 7.85 cubic feet

Whole cow = approximately 8 cubic feet of freezer space

Half cow = approximately 4 cubic feet of freezer space

The size of your family will determine your need. You may want to partner with another family to purchase a cow and split the meat, so each family has ½ of a cow. The important thing to remember is that beef is generally processed 2x year, late fall and late spring. The USDA recommends storing meat up to a year in your freezer.
